Now here’s a vastly different sight to the last few months…does this mean it’s officially winter?
Pip and I spent last Friday afternoon fleecing up the site – using a horticultural fleece that is supposed to give the plants some protection from the cold. We put the fleece over the top of the mesh or nets that hoop our beds. It’s pretty flimsy stuff though so if it gets a small rip in it (easily done when you’ve got loads of resident foxes and birds) the wind worries it and soon you have fleece all over your site. Luckily it was a fairly calm weekend wind-wise so there wasn’t too much damage by Monday when we had the brainwave to switch them round. Now all the fleece sits directly on the hoops with the mesh or nets over them, holding them fast. Just in time for the snow…
This way round the fleece is somewhat protected so that it can do its job and hopefully we’ll be able to use it again next year. But the heaviness of the snow and subsequent ice has made the hoops cave in a little. I’m hoping that the thick layer of snow will provide some insulation from these sub zero temps we’re experiencing…
